Supported Employment

Supported employment (SE) is a vocational rehabilitation method that helps adults with serious disabilities find competitive work in the community and provides the support they need to succeed.

Our services include comprehensive vocational screening, assessment, job development, and on-the-job training. We strive to the success and satisfaction of your workforce by connecting you with dedicated and skilled employees who are well-prepared for their roles.

What is Supported Employment

What Is Supported Employment?

Supported Employment is a person-centered approach that helps individuals with significant disabilities — including ID/DD — find and maintain competitive, integrated jobs in the community. It’s not about sheltered workshops or segregated settings; it’s about real jobs, fair wages, and meaningful inclusion.

Core Services Typically Include:

  • Vocational Screening & Assessment: Identifying strengths, interests, and support needs

  • Job Development: Matching individuals with employers and roles that fit their goals

  • On-the-Job Training: Providing coaching and support directly at the workplace

  • Ongoing Support: Ensuring long-term success through follow-up and skill-building

Impact & Reach:

  • In 2023, only 14% of individuals with ID/DD were employed in competitive integrated jobs nationally.

  • States vary widely in how much they support SE — some fund services for less than 5%, while others reach over 50% of eligible individuals.

  • Programs like NC’s 1915(i) Medicaid option and the Innovations Waiver offer SE services tailored to individual needs, with phases like pre-employment, stabilization, and long-term support.

Why It Matters?

SE doesn’t just help people get jobs — it helps them build confidence, independence, and community connections. It also benefits employers by introducing them to motivated, loyal, and well-supported employees.
